Who knew about this whole blogging thing - this is an amazing phenomenon that everyone seems to be doing lately. Yes, I know it's been going on for at least a few years - sometimes it just takes me a while to get with the times! I just joined FACEBOOK and cannot believe the number of people who blog about themselves - it is like reality television, but better because I already know these people (or at least I thought I did!) And now, even our President blogs.......
So what exactly is a blog? Wikipedia defines a blog as a “web site, usually maintained by an individual with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video. Many blogs provide commentary or news on a particular subject; others function as more personal online diaries.” For me, it is a great way to express my opinions on current events.
Seniors are some of the most likely people you will find blogging on the internet. Why? First, many of them have the time, and second, they enjoy sharing their wisdom and experience with others. And because of their life experience, their blogs are usually much more interesting than the teenager blogs you can find on My Space. Through blogging, baby boomers have begun to create their own nitch on the internet - here is one example of a site created for 'young people over 40' - www.myboomerplace.com.
Some locals are blogging about their everyday experiences with senior health care issues. Nancy Rivolta, an expert on memory loss who works at Williamsburg Landing, begin blogging to share tips with friends and family on how to live healthy and age gracefully. Read Nancy's blog here.
Companies are getting into the 'blog business' too - this is one of many sentimental blogs regarding memories of the past at The Chamberlin on Ft. Monroe in Hampton. The Chamberlin Blog. The Chamberlin has recently been renovated into an exquisite, waterfront retirement community and many locals have wonderful childhood remembrances of the former hotel.
We will begin posting Blogs separately on this site as we expand our capabilities. Please email me if you have a blog that you would like to share with us, especially anything related to seniors and/or healthcare issues.
